Autodesk, well actually Kinetix doesn't write plugins and won't be producing
any like they did for 3DS Classic (DOS).
If you are familiar with the Autocad market you can think of the MAX market
the same.
Autodesk can be considered a cad engine. It does a lot of general purpose
cad work, but most people buy a 3rd party addon package to customize it. If
you are an architect you buy an architectural package. So instead of
creating floor plans from scratch the addon streamlines a lot of the work.
Same thing with civil, mechanical, HVAC, etc.
If you apply that logic to MAX you see that they are making a general use 3D
program that can be further customized. If you want to do character work you
can buy Character Studio (Biped) or Bones Pro. If you do mechanical,
architectural or forensic work you wouldn't need Character Studio.
If you look at LW it is used for a lot of tv work with space scenes and now
more character animation. The focus is on developing those tools. LW is not
real big in forensic work or architectural work, not that it can't be done
with LW. Now I'll get 100 messages from these lurking LW architects. (doh!)
The original 3DS may not have been developed for architectural
visualization, but Autodesk did contract the Yost Group to create the program.
Back to plugins, Autodesk/Kinetix develops the core program and reallys on
the flourishing third party market to customize the program.
